Le Coq

Kombucha coq/Scoby Daddy performance

While the surgical procedures institutionalize the genital modification for FtM transition, I have set my focus to dissect and demystify the phallus as a male symbol, as a challenge to phallocentric authority. Trans is not a thing or being, it is rather the process through which thingness and beingness are constituted. In its proffered state, Trans is a proposition – ally oriented, marking the: with, through, of in, and across that make life possible – Trans troubles ontological states.

Kombucha coq plays with the scoby transformed as vessel for consumption of the Kombucha tea, which it had previously fermented whilst itself growing. The scoby darkens and hardens into a leathery texture as it matures - using symbiosis itself as the material and the performance - the tea being a product of the scoby and the scoby the product of its own regeneration.

The fact that the vessel is a huge penis refers to le coq ‘s original enquiry to ‘fabricate a functioning, non-reproductive organ, simply for pissing and pleasure”. It alludes to the exhilaration of Trans masculine transition, increased libido, sex toys and StP devices. It is also representative of the experimental and unchartered - the breaking free of disidentification.

“To place oneself, to live outside an epistemic and political regime, when a new cognitive framework, a new map of what it means to live, has not yet been collectively agreed is extremely difficult in the process of transition...It is a vast collective task. But however insignificant a single life might seem, no-one would dare say the effort was not worthwhile.” - Paul B Preciado( 2020), Can the Monster Speak?

Work in progress since 2021 – in the run up to phalloplasty. Sculpture and performance by Svar Simpson

le coq addresses an evolving trans identity situated in the current debate on gender politics that manifest for radical changes of paradigm. Through a self/conscious manipulation of its physiology, the transsexual body expresses a somewhat courageous slippage of attitude to the body's role as a vehicle for the functioning human organism, provoking a re-evaluation of what we understand as the 'human condition’. A living alternative expression of what being human is becoming. The Transsexual, whilst acknowledging a cultural affiliation to the Transvestite, Gay, Bisexual, even Intersexual persons contextualised within contemporary Queer theory, is very aware that its personhood affects a significantly different social agency.

As a sculptor, with skills in modelling, mould making, casting, I would like to also dissect the process of these surgeries through modelled and cast objects. The resulted organic forms/models/ prototypes manifest not only as prosthetic prototypes, but also as embodiments of fetish and desire.

‘It hurts, and is dangerous, to be de-hierarchised, to lose human status by falling outside of norms and thereby being subjected to

violence, but decentring the tangled webs of trans-huManimality nevertheless offers a better ethical starting place for enacting our relationship to Being than trying to prop up spurious anthropocentric privilege. This is where transecology begins for me.’ - Susan Stryker (2022), xviii, Transecology -Transgender Perspectives on Environment and Nature.

Shed Daddy

Performance as part of the Trans Daddy event 29th June 2024 - produced by Duckie in collaboration with the Museum of Transology

Shed Daddy aka Svar Simpson is working this evening on his ongoing project 'le coq'.

Installed in a shed in the churchyard of St. Pauls multiplex. Svar is creating penile protheses using KOMBUCHA SCOBY.
SCOBY is the 'culture' that ferments sweet tea to make the slightly effervescent Kombucha Tea. The KOMBUCHA SCOBY is rubbery and skin-like and smells vinegary and acidic. The penises created tonight will slowly biodegrade, shrinking and darkening.

They will eventually crumble, like an autumn leaf, but can also be moisturised with linseed oil (or Nivea!), which produces a material known in the fashion industry as 'vegan leather'.

The biodegrading phalluses are part of Svar's ongoing project 'le coq', and relate to their ambivalence towards current available phalloplasty surgery.

More importantly they represent are symbolic of a deconstruction (and reconstruction), of worldwide phallocentric social and political constraints.

After this particular performance, the Duckie team and other performers renamed Svar "Scoby Daddy"

The performative ends with Svar dancing to loud, sexy music, swinging his cock and pouring Kombucha through it, and inviting people to drink!

Much of the performance is interactive with the audience, explaining, in conversation with, revealing...

Touch my coq.

Sharing Kombucha

Everyone is invited to taste Kombucha, and handle the SCOBY - wipes and gloves available
